Developing a Morphological Curriculum - An Investigation of the Camera Obscura

(EN)

This research identifies key principles for developing a curriculum using Goethe's morphological method, and provides guidelines and examples for any teacher wishing to develop a morphological approach. These principles are developed through action research into my teaching practice, where I develop a morphological curriculum though teaching the topic of the camera obscura. By reflecting on this fieldwork I characterize my teaching method, which informs the development of the curriculum, as morphological. I then develop a methodology for my teaching method based on Goethe's morphology, and thereby explore the notions of 'embodied questioning' and 'embodied understanding'.

Connecting phenomenology and learning as basis for responsible action: the case of MSc agroecology in Norway

(EN)

In the agroecology MSc program at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, which started in 2000, the aim is to develop five core competencies: reflection, participation, observation, vision and dialogue, all of which are vital for graduates to be prepared for contributing to the development of sustainable farming and food systems. A goal is to implement a paradigmatic shift in terms of how we teach agroecology: a shift from a theory-centred approach with students as distant analysts of what is going on in agriculture to a phenomenon-based, action-oriented approach. Doing agroecology has been given primacy over knowing agroecology. Our approach can be described as a shift from theoretical knowledge (theology, natural sciences and mathematics) to practical knowledge (called praxis by Aristotle) being the starting point of learning. Praxis is being activated and developed when dealing with unique cases and is different from both practice and theoretical knowledge as it seeks to merge theory and practice, transcends the traditional disciplinary and departmental boundaries in academia, and embraces a holistic orientation, which is essential for sustainability. We are currently researching the conversion process from theory based to phenomenon based learning, based on an analysis of 356 reflection documents submitted by the students over the past 13 years.

Das Äther-Skelett der Meeresfische

Heart form, structure and dynamic function: the 'multiscale morphodynamics' of the heart

(EN)

The heart fascinates many of us. Different approaches can be taken to it. My approaches have been through 1) basic medical school teaching, 2) observing fluid phenomena, 3) the sculptural shaping of spontaneously oscillating streams (Flowforms) against a background of Rudolf Steiner's provocative remarks on the heart rhythm and function, 4) the handling of post-mortem or post-surgical hearts, valves and blood vessels, 5) the making of fluid and structural models in relation to heart surgical procedures and image appearances, 6) studies of casts of cardiovascular cavities, 7) medical imaging of healthy and diseased hearts, mainly by magnetic resonance (MRI), and interpretation of the images at clinical decision-making meetings and 8) microscopy (histology) of heart muscle. Each has serious limitations and its own strengths. They contribute in different ways towards the informed imagining of the heart’s ‘multiscale morphodynamics’ – the continual interplay of its forms, structures and dynamic function across the range of scales between molecular and systemic (and beyond). Changes across very different scales of time should also be considered: the periodicity of each heart cycle, its changes from rest to exercise, the deduced emergence of effective forms and arrangements over the epochs of evolutionary time, and the individual formative stages of embryogenesis. In a ten minute presentation, I can offer an illustrated glimpse of the complex, integrated, morphodynamic elegance of the living human/mammalian heart.

Bildekräftewahrnehmung - Methodenvergleich von Wortmeditation und Handprobe an Nelkenwurz (Geum rivale)

Colloids and Questions of Substance

(EN)

Metal Nanoparticles can be easily synthesised by non-toxic methods and the resulting colloidal suspensions can create beautiful colours in their interaction with light. The experiments lead to open questions about the nature of substances, dissolved chemicals and homeopathic potentisation.

An occult morphology of the human eye: Ontophyletics and enactive focal vision.

(EN)

The neo-Darwinian selectionist model of evolution often presents the daunting task of building the eye as one of the most marvelous achievements of the Blind Watchmaker. A comparative study of the morphological development of the retina and its central connections in mammalian species can afford a more Goetheanistic view of the ontophyletics of the eye in the context of its deployment in practical activity and in cognitive development. To play on an aphorism of Goethe, this might be something on the order of "Wären nicht die Augen gliederhaft, wie könnten wir die Welt ergreifen."

The aesthetics of the whorls: perianth formation and transformation in angiosperms

(EN)

What makes a flower appear to us as such? A flexible and living morphological approach to portraying perianth evolution is proposed, requiring consideration of the origin and diversification of petaloid organs and developmental processes acting on the whole flower.

Contribution to the development of Pfeiffer´s Chroma-Test for the characterization of contaminated soils

(EN)

Pfeiffer´s method, known as the Chroma-Test, is a variation of the horizontal Capillary Dynamolysis method initially used by L. Kolisko. It belongs to the group of image forming methods designed to investigate the formative forces and it is best suited for soils and composts. To validate Pfeiffer´s method it is necessary to make some modifications of the original procedure, mainly regarding the amounts of the fluids used in the experiment and fixing the lighting conditions during the various stages. A modified procedure will be proposed in order to ensure reproducible patterns. This is part of a doctorate research about the potential of the Capillary Dynamolysis method to characterize contaminated soils. It is carried out at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Minas, with the codirection of Dr. Sease from the Goetheanum.

The Goethean scientific method in the study of fossils

(EN)

This is a progress report on a study of extinct Mesozoic marine vertebrates using the Goethean method, with special emphasis on the clade Plesiosauria. The plesiosaurs are an iconic group of fossilised marine reptiles with a unique body plan that has appeared only once in evolutionary history, so the form dynamics (morphodynamics) of this body plan could be studied in a naturally constrained phylogenetic grouping. Notably, engaging the Goethean method as a study tool required the investigation to extend beyond specific questions on morphology and into intensive soul work. I will discuss the various levels of exploration that emerge out of a Goethean research project to demonstrate that Goethean science is a route into the personal and universal psyche, as well as a means of exploring concrete scientific questions.

Roots of the cultural imperialism grounded in the paradigm of the mechanistic determinism

(EN)

Even if we mind that we don’t share the opinion that everything, including thought, can be reduced to a physico-chemical process, are we finally so sure of that? Where does this imperialism of techno-science in the main-stream thinking come from? Is this cultural power really grounded in science itself? The way to answer these questions require a historical perspective, how from Galileo to the present day objectivity expands and develops into a proposition which contrasts with the initial aim. In today's perspective of science, the so called goethean position of human beings face-to-face with perceptions finds its own right.
